Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception" By Robert Snowden, Peter Thompson and Tom Troscianko
Published May 2006
Basic Vision demystifies the processes through which the brain ‘sees’. It leads us through the various elements that come together in our perception of size, colour, motion, and three-dimensional space. It illustrates the intricacy of the visual system, discussing its development during infancy, and revealing how the brain can get it wrong, either as a result of brain damage, or through illusion. The book also demonstrates the importance of contemporary techniques and methodology, and neuroscience-based techniques in particular, in driving forward our understanding of the visual system. Ideal for undergraduate courses in visual perception.
Fantastic Optical Illusions" By Gianni A. Sarcone & Marie-Jo Waeber from the Archimedes’ Lab (see below)
Available August 2006
This book, volume 2 in the series, contains another huge batch of previously unpublished optical illusions, as well as new adaptations of lesser-known examples. All the illusions have been designed and drawn up by archimedes-lab.org. Each image carries an explanation of how it works and details of why it fools the human brain. There is a glossary of illusion terms and a gallery of ‘classic’ illusion types.
